MythTV A GoGo!

March 21st, 2005 3 comments

Well, I’ve spent a semi-productive weekend turning an old PC that was donated to me into a hard disk recorder, using the wonderful MythTV package and Fedora Core 3.

It’s still not a perfect setup, as I’m currently using an old Hauppage WinTV Go card (with a bttv tuner), so the picture quality is not wonderful. The other problem I have is that although I can get TVTime, and XawTV to receive a picture, I’m not able to receive any kind of picture in MythTV – which is something that I will have to solve. Otherwise though, I can get everything else working (i.e. MythWeather, MythWeb, etc).

Once I’ve got this one up and running, I’m planning on building a much more powerful system, with at least 2 cards (probably Digital so that I can watch FreeView, and get a better picture signal), and put it in a pretty case next to the TV. I thought it would probably be best to see if I can get it running at first on some (relatively) free stuff, before I splash out serious cash on a better system.

If anybody wants, I should be able to provide some notes on how I acheived the setup, and how I got everything working.

Unfortunately, I still can’t get a picture on the damn thing. I think it could be to do with the bttv module, and I script I used to find the best settings for the driver. It asks you to add some lines to /etc/modprobe.conf and I think that is what has nailed it. Unfortunately, when I put it back to how it was, it still didn’t work. I’m coming to the conclusion that it may just be better to reformat and start again (“Build one to throw away” as Richard always says…).

I’m really excited about this. I saw a teaser advert on BBC One last night for a 2 part mini series, which is a dramatisation of Robert Harris’s excellent “Archangel”.

There’s no details as of yet (the trailer simply said “Coming Soon” and that it was a 2 part series), but they’ve called some clips from the series, and the only major change that I can see is that the journalist is English and not American.

For more info, check out the IMDB, where there is already a page for the tv series.

Nicorette Adverts

January 7th, 2005 No comments

I’ve just noticed over the last couple of days that the latest round of Nicorette adverts, here in the UK at least, seemed to be aimed at women. I can’t remember seeing a man in any of their adverts for over a year now. Interesting….

On a completely different note…

My iPod has arrived. Unfortunately, I’m at work, and I don’t have time to sit around and play with it.

Still, I can jump on the desk and starting singing “I got my iiiiiiii-Pod, I got my iiiiiiii-Pod”, whilst gyrating my hips in a hypnotic manner.

Jump Britain

January 7th, 2005 No comments

I watch this programme on Channel 4 last night. Again, it was brilliant.

What was nice, was they had focussed on British participants of Parkour, and not just gone back to the French founders.

I was so amazed that Sebastien, the main French founder, was still so down to earth, even though he has created a world wide movement, and was still willing to help even beginners and offer them advice. Good for him.

I was a little disappointed this time though, as compared to Jump London (the first programme), the final jump montage sequence didn’t really seem to pay attention to the movements, just the fact that they were happening on top of “big buildings”. But hey, it was still a good programme.

Now, off to find some bollards to leap on…..
