Things That Make Me Chuckle

May 12th, 2005 No comments

I saw two things yesterday that raised a smile on my face.

The first was a leaflet pinned to a notice board at work (it’s been there since I started over a year ago, but I didn’t notice this until the other day) called “Safe Manual Handling at Work” – Because those manuals can get heavy can’t they?

The second was a road sign I saw whilst driving home for work. Again, I see this sign twice on my way to and from work (on my usual route), but never really thought about it. It was one of the triangular warning signs (with just an exclamation mark in the centre), and underneath it said “Blind Summit” – I never knew there was a meeting place for visually impaired people there!

Incidentally, I’m thinking about starting a T-Shirt printing/design company (just for my friends and myself to start with, but who knows!) as I’ve been coming up with some good things to put on T-Shirts recently, and can’t find anything like them in the shops.

My favourite at the moment is one that I came up with driving to work this morning. It simply says:
100% Genius,
1% Retarded

or slightly less offensive (and significantly less subtle about the joke):
98% Genius,
3% Can’t Count

I’ve also come up with some other absolute blinders, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. I guess I could get a Cafe-Press site up and running….

Computer Use

May 7th, 2005 1 comment

What’s quite interesting about my job is telling people what you do.

People then immediately get quite defensive about using a computer in front of you, frightened that you are going belittle them because they can’t quite type as fast as you, or aren’t as competent.

As a case in point, I went to the opticians this morning, and obviously had to tell them that I use a computer screen a lot as it’s had to write software without looking at one. The optician, a 20-something lovely lady, then started explaining that she thought that I probably thought she wasn’t very good at using a computer (she was typing my history into a laptop) and that she preferred pen and paper.

Now, there was nothing wrong with the way that she was using the computer, she seemed quite competent, and the screen she was using looked quite complex and full of fields for her to fill in – and she actually did it very well making few mistakes.

So why is it that people feel that they need to excuse their computer use when in the company of a software developer?

Im sure that it’s probably down to people’s insecurities, but it really isn’t necessary. My job involves making software for people of all levels of competency to use, and if I’m arrogant enough to think that only computer literate people would be using a piece of software, then it is me that is at fault and not the user.

I guess people probably don’t think of it that way though….

Why?

April 27th, 2005 No comments

Why does seeing the words “Deep Fill” on a packet of sandwiches cause me to smile?

It’s a childish joke, but one I can’t stop finding amusing.

Oh well, better go play with some stickle-bricks or something…..

God only knows how I managed it, but I spent a whole day with a packet of deep fill sandwiches on my desk a couple of days later. This kind of thing makes working much more difficult.

Bottle Opener Sandals

April 22nd, 2005 No comments

Hey, now here’s a good, sorry I meant crap, idea.

Sandals with a bottle opener in the sole.

Next time I’m in a panic where to find a bottle opener, I’m able to think “Hey, if only I had those sandals where I could open my bottle using the sole, which is probably covered in crap and dog poo, and then stick the bottle opening, which has just come into contact with said crap and poo, near my mouth to drink!”

Brilliant idea Reef, wish I’d thought of that one. Retards.

Mmmm, warm inside

April 19th, 2005 No comments

I’ve just changed my email preferences for Amazon (Seeing as I bought my iPod from them 3 months ago, they see fit to email crap EVERY week – and it’s annoying!)

Anyway, they’ve ended their email withWarmest Regards…Oooh, I’ve got a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. It’s good to know that businesses “love me”. 😉

New McDonalds Adverts

April 14th, 2005 No comments

I’m really confused.

The current UK TV marketing campaign for McDonalds involves people with stereotypical accents from around the world talking about 99p meals and what they should do with their 1p change from a pound coin.

The current advert they keep on showing is the one where the suggest using it as a wishing well token and asking for luxury mansion.

What the hell is the accent that bloke has in the advert? I just don’t get it. I got the last “Mexican” advert, but this guy sounds half dutch, partially Australian, some South African, a bit Scandinavian and falls back to an English accent for some words. I think that there might be some Irish in there as well!

Here’s A Thought…

April 4th, 2005 No comments

…for a Monday afternoon.

6 or 7 years ago, man struggled with the Y2K bug. It was eventually solved, and the root problem solved too (increase date fields to have 4 digits for the year).

Here’s the question: Do we now have a Y10K bug? If so, would it be a good idea to solve it now rather than later?

Hmmmm……..

Clocks Moving Forward

March 27th, 2005 No comments

I’m probably not the only person having problems with this today. I think I’ve probably updated all of my watches, and my alarm clock, but I can never be quite sure. And then there is the clock in the car!

Anyway, I think this guy has got the right idea. Instead of moving time forward 1 hour, spend 23 days moving the clocks back 1 hour at a time! Brilliant.

What About Finish?

March 23rd, 2005 1 comment

O2 are taking Liquid Telecom to court for using bubbles and the colour blue in an advert.

Surely then, Finish dishwasher tablets use these devices too. Are they sueing them? Or is this just a way to get anti-competitive on their asses without dropping prices?
