Building Haiku

May 19th, 2006 No comments

As I type, I have an old PC currently running BeOS 5 (which just flies!), and it’s currently downloading the current SVN checkout of Haiku.

At the same time, I’m listening to my brand new copy of the new Snow Patrol album “Eyes Open” – It’s every little bit as good as I hoped it would be, and then some more.

Excellent!

Bloody Hell!

February 21st, 2006 1 comment

I’ve just realised that I haven’t blogged anything in ages.

I guess the reason is that I have been quite busy recently. Not one thing in particular, but lots of little things here and there! So in no particular order:

  • I’ve hurt my shoulder rowing
  • Saw “The Darkness” the other day in Brighton – Amazing
  • A particularly fabulous person bought me “Alice Cooper – Classicks” – he still rocks.
  • At work, I’ve been pimped-out to the Web Development department – expect a rewrite of this site soon!
  • Volunteered to do the London to Brighton Bike Ride this year – should be fun!
  • It’s my birthday this Friday – Rich, doesn’t seem like a year ago you came down for my last birthday! Feel like doing it this year? 😉
  • Broken my second iPod in one year
  • Bought iPod shuffle (see above! Can’t break the HDD in that little bugger!)
  • Plus many more things I have forgotten about!

The Foo Fighters

December 18th, 2005 No comments

I went to see the Foo Fighters last night at Earl’s Court in London. Absolutely amazing. There are no other words I could really use.

I’m soooo glad I went, and I definitely want to see them again!

Mr Brightside

October 30th, 2005 No comments

I’m a big “The Killers” fan. I’ve just heard an amazing remix of Mr Brightside on MTV2.

They simply described it as “Mr Brightside Remix” by “The Killers”. I’ve just searched the Internet, and iTunes, but I can’t seem to find the exact remix that I was looking for. I even looked on the MTV2 website for a playlist, but they don’t have one listed.

Like most popular songs, there are several remixes around, and it sounded quite similar to “Jacques Lu Cont’s Thin White Duke remix*”, but that’s not quite it.

The mix I heard was a slower version of the song, but it wasn’t just that – problem is, I can’t quite put my finger on it! Does anyone have any ideas?

* Incidentally, I’m liking the Lu Cont remix, and have bought it from iTunes.

Bad Planning…

August 15th, 2005 No comments

Damn, I useless at planning!

I remembered over the weekend that I’m supposed to go see the Dog Racing, on a work’s social night, on Tuesday but that I also had a hair cut arranged on Tuesday night as well! Guess I’ll just have to go hairy for a few more days!

Then, I realised that late last week I had booked “Foo Fighters” tickets on Saturday 17th December, which is the day after my office Christmas party! That’ll be fun!

I really should sort out some way of getting a shared calendar going that syncs between Sunbird at work, Sunbird at home, KCalendar, Outlook, my iPAQ and my mobile phone. That way I’m pretty sure that I’m not going to screw everything up!

I found them!

June 29th, 2005 No comments

For the past week I’ve been a bit worried that I’d mislaid about 5 of my new CDs. I couldn’t seem to find them anywhere. Rather annoyingly, it included Faithless’s new Greatest Hits CD which I’m loving.

Fortunately I found them this morning, in a carrier bag hidden in my bedroom (looks like I filled it with stuff from downstairs to put away in my room, but then couldn’t be arse with the putting away part). Panic over.

And whilst I’m on the subject of music, I’m not liking the new Basement Jaxx song (sorry, don’t know the name) as it just sounds too much like “Strict Machine” by GoldFrapp. But, I’m beginning to really love “Speed Of Sound” by Coldplay, having previously slated it.

I’m Annoyed

May 26th, 2005 1 comment

Something has knackered my ID3 tags in my MP3 collection, and I’m pointing the finger firmly at iTunes (or may be even WinAmp).

I created a new CD for my car last night. Now, my stereo is good enough to let me burn MP3s on to a CD, and then plays the tracks. It can even read ID3 tags (it appears to have some issues in this area, but it seems happier with just ID3 v1 tags). So, last night, I stayed up late, burnt 13 albums (that I own) to a CD. I even validated some of the ID3 tags myself and corrected them using WinAmp, because they all appeared to be missing.

When I got in the car this morning, the tags were missing off all the tracks that I corrected, plus all the tracks on Albums that I ripped previously. Only the ID3 tags on albums that I ripped last night remain – and as yet, I haven’t imported them in to iTunes.

So, here’s what I reckon is happening: iTunes is removing ID3 tags (the bastard). WinAmp has a bug in it which means it doesn’t read or write ID3 tags properly (having not started WinAmp in a while, I got a message about upgrading to v 5.91 – I’m currently using v5.05 – so there might be a slight difference in version going on there!)

Has anyone else experienced this? No? Just me then….

Anyway, this whole thing has got me thinking about my MP3 collection, and what to do with it when I build my MythTV box. I’ll probably store all my MP3s on that box, seeing as it is going to have a couple of monster HDD drives, so I will be able to share them out using NFS and Samba, plus play them through the TV (if I should ever want to – although I can’t imagine that being likely).

So this would be a good time to look at the collection, reorganise it, check the filenames, possible organise it into artist directories, clear out duplicates, may be re-rip albums into a higher bit-rate, check ID3 tags, see if I can get information on all of the songs, etc.

That means that I can then clear out iTunes (apart from the songs that I have purchased), and rebuild the library in there, which should then populate correctly down to my iPod as well.

Just got to build my box then!

New Songs

April 20th, 2005 No comments

There’s been a raft of new songs from new albums that have been aired on the radio at the moment, and I’m not entirely impressed with them!

The new Oasis song “Lyla” sounds like something off their “Be Here Now” album, which came out when I did my GCSEs in 1998 – they seem to have moved back 7 years in terms of creativity!

I also heard the new Coldplay song “Speed of Sound” yesterday morning. It’s just boring. It’s not unpleasent, but it’s nothing special – it sounds like a filler track on on of their previous albums – it’s not the type of song that I would expect them to launch a very important album with.

Also just released is the new Jamiroquai song (sorry, but I can’t remember the name). This one is better than Oasis and Coldplay – because I feel indifferent about it. It don’t hate it, but I don’t instantly love it either. That usually means that it’ll grow on me with time.

Finally, I’m loving the new songs by Athlete, and Razorlight (I’m sure the Razorlight song has been released before though). I’ll definitely be looking to buy those albums at some point.

More Music

April 10th, 2005 No comments

I should have logged this last Friday (1st April), but I only got around to listening to them this weekend!

Anyway, last Friday, I bought 2 more CDs – “Hotel” by Moby and “Human After All” by Daft Punk.

Both are pretty much as expected, with no major surprises or pieces of inspiration. Daft Punk doesn’t really do it for me this time around (although it’s still a good album) – it doesn’t really have the spark and energy of “Discovery”. “Hotel” isn’t too bad, and is Moby experimenting with a slightly different sound, but still doesn’t beat “Play” in my opinion.

I think that is it for CDs that I want at the moment, I’m guessing that there will be a couple of CDs out in several weeks that I’ll want – I’m kind of getting into “The Bravery” and “The Kaiser Chiefs” so may be they will be next.

More New CDs

March 18th, 2005 1 comment

Having said that The Stereophonics were going to be my next purchase, I kept my word and bought it yesterday, along with “Pushing The Senses” by Feeder.

My first reactions? The Stereophonics still haven’t beaten “Word Gets Around”, but to be fair, this album is a very different sound, and I don’t think that it would be truely fair to compare this to any other album in the past, having said that though, I still prefer “Word Gets Around”.

One the other hand….. Bravo Feeder! An absolutely amazing album. I’ve got a couple of older Feeder albums, and I always felt that there were a couple of songs that I liked on each, but didn’t like the rest – this is completely different – I’m loving every song.

Only problem now though, is that I have identified another 3 CDs that I would like, so I’m probably going to end up buying them fairly soon too. So the next purchases will be (sorry, I haven’t worked out their names yet!) the new albums by The Bravery, Daft Punk and Moby

I’m going to have to stop this. I’m spending too damn much.
