I’m slightly worried that it might not have a bluetooth data connection on it to get the pictures off, but I’m pretty sure that it will – the only thing I think it is missing is a modem data connection, but I don’t really use that anyway, so that’s not a problem.

The only thing that I think I would miss is the ability to put applications on to the handset, but I don’t think that’ll be a problem either – I’ll just have to learn to use J2ME instead of learning to use C++ on Symbian (that’s so that I can finish my damn “GrogBlog”), and seeing as I don’t use half the “smartphone” features on my 6600, it doesn’t really seem like it will bother me.

Incidentally, following a cue from one of the guys that I work with, I recently bought a £25 Nokia 1100 Pay as you Go, so that I can take it out clubbing with me, or other places where I wouldn’t mind losing/bashing/destroying it so much (yeah, a £25 loss would be annoying, but not as annoying as a several hundred pound loss for my “main” phone). As far as the handset goes, I haven’t used it at all yet, but essentially it’s a 3330/3410 repackaged into a smaller handset, so it does all the basic things really well (which is all I’m really going to need), and rather wonderfully it takes the same battery as my 6600 (so for the time being, I can swap and change batteries as and when I need). I’ll let you know how I get on with that one.

The one that I’ve fallen in love with is the Sony Ericsson S700, but I couldn’t find any reference to it being launched on my network. So at lunch time today, I headed into a branch of “Phones 4 U”, only to be told that it is being discontinued and looks like it won’t be out on my network – ever

Damn, stupid mobile networks.

I’m also being tempted by the Samsung e720, but I’m just not sure.

Apparently, a 93 year-old managed to beat a 13 year-old champion Speed-Texter (SMS) by sending the same message via Morse Code.

Genius. And apparently the young whipper-snapper used “txt” abbreviations, but he sent the whole thing and still beat her.

I never see why people catch this, because you get a warning about installing applications, but some how people keep falling for it.

Anyway, this post from F-Secure seems to offer an explanation:Well, we’ve spoken to many people who’ve actually been infected, and they typically explain it like this: They got this weird message on the phone, requesting a “Yes” or “No” answer. So they clicked “No”. But the message popped up immediatly again. And they clicked “No” – only to see the message pop up again. And since “No” didn’t seem to be working, they clicked “Yes”…

The message would have disappeared if they would have walked away from the area where they were (to get out of the range of the infected phone), but there’s no way for an end user to know that.

This sounds amazing. Send Google a query via SMS, receive SMS replies. Brilliant!

It’s like having “Frink” in my pocket, but sooooo much more.

Apparently, in the not too distant future, there should be a version of Skype available for Mobile phones (and may be on a variety of platforms).

My problem is this: How much is this going to cost? Yeah, sure the client is free, but the GPRS packets are likely to cost!

Lets work this out. Lets assume that for every 10Kb I send, it’s going to cost me 10p, and that the client sends roughly 10Kb per minute (Having never used Skype before, I’m totally unaware how many Kb it sends per minute, so I’m just coming up with a rough guess here). Therefore, it will cost me 10p per minute to use Skype.

Now, for my contract (which is quite expensive call-wise), I’m getting 200 minutes free every month to Landlines and other mobiles on my network, so whilst I’m in that bracket, it’s costing me an extra 10p per minute to use Skype to call home (assuming that someone is using a computer at home).

But to be fair, I would pay that price, no matter who or where in the world I was calling. So in actual fact, if I’m calling abroad, then it does work out a bit cheaper.

But, that’s not the full story. Now imagine that I am calling another telephone number using Skype (i.e. not to another computer). I’m then being charged 10p per minute, plus the cost of the Skype charges (of about 1p per minute), that’s 11p (for a landline call) – if that were in the UK, that would be free for me! Plus the rates go up if you are calling another network. And then you have the concern of your credit with Skype running out half way through a phone call.

And lets not forget that we are dealing with assumptions here. I’ve got a feeling the cost per 10Kb is much higher for myself (30p rings a bell), so instantly I’m being charged stupid money to call home.

Not for me I’m afraid. My advice – do the math first before you start to use it, it may cost you more in the long run.

My interest has been partially peeked by the Motorola RAZR, but I hate that bulge at the end. (And the fact that the keypad is ugly, and Motorola’s crappy menu system).

Here comes a solution from Samsung – the V740 (look, no bulge!).

Unfortunately, it’s a Samsung, so it’s bound to have a crap battery life.

Come on Siemens, Nokia and Sony Ericsson – get with the programme!

Hopefully this guy doesn’t have a Series 60 Nokia, because if he does then he is going to end up with a virus at some point, if he is willing just to accept a file being sent to his phone via bluetooth like that!
