Time Flies

June 22nd, 2005 No comments

I realised the other day that I haven’t posted anything for sometime now. In all honesty, I’ve been quite busy recently, so haven’t turned on my computer for ages (well, long enough to find something to talk about).

On the other hand, I have been working quietly on a little extension for Internet Explorer that lets you examine the DOM of a web page by accessing it from a context menu – but it’s far from complete, so I’ll post more about that when I’m ready and it’s ready.

Technorati Tags!

April 10th, 2005 1 comment

As some of you may have noticed, I’ve now integrated my blog (partially) with Technorati.

I’ve now categorised all of my 147 posts (this is number 147), which took bloody ages.

At some point I’ll integrate the categories with the site page so that you can browse by category as well.

I’m particularly pleased that I have managed to create a new Technorati Tag of “Suicidal Birds”.

Excellent!

Grrr, more blog spam

April 9th, 2005 No comments

I got my first ever trackback yesterday

Annoyingly though, it was from a spammer again! Grrrrr.

Guess I’ll just have to make sure that all I vet all trackbacks now as well!

Brilliant. :-/

Woh! Worrying!

March 18th, 2005 1 comment

It’s an interesting thing, checking your webstats (Yeah, OK, not that interesting, but y’know)

My pages have apparently been scanned by this Bot. Whilst I’m not here letting people download copyright protected MP3s and the like, it’s kind of worrying thinking that at some point I might be slapped with a demand for payment because I mentioned the word “Microsoft” or “AJAX” somewhere on this site.

Good Little Moveable Type Plugin!

March 5th, 2005 No comments

I don’t use Moveable Type, but this looks like a good plugin, none-the-less.

When somebody posts a trackback or comment to your site, this little do-hicky of a plugin will go and read the “Favicon” of that site to present in your pages. Not a bad little idea I think!

I’m already getting ideas as to how I can integrate this into my blog!

Woohoo!

February 25th, 2005 1 comment

It’s my birthday! Grand old age of 23. I’ll be drawing my pension soon….

Well, it’s the morning after my night out, and I had a spanking good time, thanks to my mates. My friend Richard came down from his home town of Windsor to come out with us (which was very nice of him). I also have to say, that I’m responsible for this. Hehe.

I’ve also found this blog post (by accident), which was just a bit bizarre, and seeing as she is going out tonight as well, I know how she’s going to feel tomorrow morning!

I’ve just also noted that this was my 100th blog post. Sweet!

Arrgggh. First Piece Of Blog Spam

February 13th, 2005 No comments

Bar stewards. The lot of them.

Rather annoyingly they posted it on a page that is about how I’m planning to stop comment spam. I’m pretty sure that that was not a coincidence, nor ironic.

I actually read an article a little while ago where somebody had interviewed a blog spammer. Apparently, “It’s nothing personal”, which I would say in most cases it isn’t (N.B. I’m not endorsing it at all!), but to post a spam comment (the only spam comment on my site) on a page on how I plan to stop blog spam is taking the pee a bit really, isn’t it? Therefore, it is personal and I’m annoyed.

Damn it! Got my second piece today. I’ve now made every comment that is posted to this site invisible, until I give it permission to be shown. That’ll stop the beggers.

Why Captchas Don’t Work

January 21st, 2005 No comments

Here’s a pretty good example of why Captchas are a very good way of stopping spammers from signing up for things. With this level of obscurity, it’s getting kind of ridiculous.

I read a little while ago that most Captchas can be read by standard OCR software, and judging by the way that spammers and scammer are able to produce software for their “cause”, it probably wouldn’t take them that long to produce some classifier AI network that could handle the rest that off-the-self OCR software can’t read.

But it get’s better than that – apparently the clever little devils have managed to get around this in a far easier way – by getting people to read the Captchas. Simply, all they do is get people to sign up for a free Porn site, and show them a captcha from another site. Real person enters correct letters/numbers, they get free email address. System defeated.
