I’ve Converted!

September 24th, 2005 Leave a comment Go to comments

Well, I have now officially joined the land of “the convertees”, as I am now the proud owner of a Mac Mini (and a Mighty Mouse)! Woohoo!

I’ve only just set it up, so I’m still getting used to it and I’m playing around with it alot, but I like it!

Now, can anyone suggest what I should install on it first? I’m already anxious to start some development work….

    • Fink. The run ‘fink list’, or use FinkCommander, and install all your favourite Unix stuff.
    • X11. It’s on the disc, if it’s not already installed (check /Applications/Utilities). So, you can install KDE, Gnome, and everything else through Fink.
    • Join the Apple Developer Connection as a free member, and install Xcode Tools (unless they’re already on the disc/installed). Xcode is great.
    • OmniWeb, Camino, Firefox. The Mac has the most available browsers, pretty much!
    • LyX/Aqua.
    • Vim Aqua.
    • NetNewsWire Lite for RSS reading.
    • Adium — the only IM client you need.
    • Colloquy — the only IRC client you need.
    • SubEthaEdit.
    • and, finally — Quicksilver. Spend time learning Quicksilver, it rules. You need never use any other tool.
